The Agha punishes them both and they nearly starve that winter. The feudal society he describes is so primitive, you are jarred when a character references an automobile.

The novel won the Varlik prize for that year Turkey’s highest literary prize and earned Kemal a national reputation. Its author deserves to be more widely read.

Memed is a Robin Hood type of character in what is also a kind of proletarian novel.
