Click to expand.Jeff, NO Full Range driver is going to match having a dedicated woofer and tweeter. Such a FR driver does not exist, regardless of price. My system was Audio Nirvana 10 inch deluxe (with the Bigger magnet) FR drivers, and the speaker boxes were made exactly to Audio Nirvana's plans. Some things sounded good, like The Ventures, whose records had a lot of midrange. However, Orchestral material sounded poor. It sounded like a blanket was placed over the speakers. Strings, especially. I've been playing around with FR and open baffle (OB) lately.

I started down this path because I was interested in very low power tube amps, which led to high efficiency drivers, which led to FR drivers, which led to open baffle (OB) applications. I suspect many have gone down this path long before me. Anyway, after getting sucked in by reading hundreds of posts in epic threads about FR and OB, I bought some cheap Visaton BG-20s and literally mounted them in cardboard in the basement. Then I mounted them in barrel-shaped 1/2' ply. Better. Then I bought WildBurro Betsy 8' FR drivers, which were mounted in the ply baffles. Wow, really nice. I've been playing around with them for a few weeks now, moving them around the room, supporting them on the bottom with a small sub.

They sound quite different because of the back wave bouncing around the room. When well positioned, out in the room and away from side walls, there are moments I'm almost frozen in place because of the immensity of the image being projected. It is not pinpoint, almost the opposite, but sounds really good to my ears when it's right. My next step is having bought Eminence Alpha 15A 15' woofers and 3/4' cherry plywood. I'll mount them with the Betsy drivers in the next week or two and will cross the woofers at 200-300 hz.

Many others have reported success using these two drivers in OB applications. I'm excited to try it, and love the idea of these giant diaphragms cranking in free air.

FWIW, when listening to the Betsy drivers, I haven't felt the need for tweeter support, although I'm also in my 50s.I'm not going to claim that OB is the best thing ever, and there are plenty of detractors for sure, but it is (1) fun and inexpensive to play around with and (2) provides a markedly different sound than normal reflex designs. For me, it's an interesting way to play around with an aspect of the hobby that is very DIY but not insanely expensive.

If you've never heard OB and are into the hobby, you owe it to yourself to hang some Betsy, Dayton, Fostex, AudioNirvana, Lowther or other appropriate drivers in a slab of ply and check it out for yourself.

I bought this subwoofer sight unseen and without the showroom testing that others have gone through. I did this mainly because audio equipment showrooms are sparse in my locale - there's Walmart and then it's quite a step down to Sears. Not much to pick and choose from. So, I had to rely mostly on online technical reviews and customer satisfaction reviews. My choices boiled down to the Sony SACS9, Klipsch R-10SW, Polk Audio PSW10, and JBL Arena S10. The Klipsch was the first to be eliminated, based solely on budget reasons. If I had more money to spend, maybe I would have chosen it. Next to be eliminated was the popular Polk PSW10.

It seemed to me to be the 'plain Jane' of the group - a good solid performer, but nothing really outstanding. So, the final choice boiled down to the Sony SACS9. I used these speakers as a drop in replacement for the mid range in my Realistic Mach Twos. For this purpose, these are perfectly suitable, inexpensive speakers. After tweaking the terminal wires with wire cutters (which are oddly sized in the Mach Two) they fit into the boxes perfectly.

I was a little worried about these having a different ohm rating than the original mids (8 vs 6) but haven't noticed a drop in sound quality. In fact, they sound better, if anything. I did have to set he mid range on the L-pads a little bit higher than 'flat', but that's not a big deal. As other reviewers have stated, do let them break in for a few hours. They sound harsh out of the box but quickly mellow out.One more thing, the reason I docked a star: you may be able. Oh well, long story short.I was finding a replacement for my morel dotech ovation 6.5'. Decided to get these as they seems legit and the price was right.

God damn i was right! After meddling with the settings for the amp and hu, the music that came out of it was sweet and beyond my expectation for these cheap loots. My set up -Hu - pioneer 4350 double din dvd playerAm - Mosconi one series 120.4.Front component speakers - These pair of under-rated monsters!I've attached a video which i took in my car using my Samsung A7 mobile phone.PS: Whoever said that the bass is weak, you may need to find tune your HU's settings. Amazing sounding little speakers, I bought these speaker to replace the dash tweeters on my 2005 Jeep Liberty, of course I had do make custom fit adapters out of plastic but fitted just right. In the beginning I was just looking for OEM replacement tweeters, but were a little too pricey for a set of cheap tweeters, after I saw these on Parts Express I couldn't resist but to buy a full-range speaker pair. When they advertised these speakers as full range they weren't kidding, these speakers go really low, maybe below 30Hz. And the displacement distance is just astonishing, specially for speakers of his size. All of these without sacrificing audio quality.Great speaker all around, would recommend these for DIY projects, replacement speakers or speaker building enthusiasts. Awesome speakers for the price!

I loaded these into some Jensen cabinets meant for home theatre but converted everything so I can use them as small monitors in my band. It turned out great and these little suckers can put out some bass if you know how to push them and not too hard, I even used to cabinets for a bass gig when my cab was out of commission.

Magnets are large and heavy and it just looks like a high quality eminence just without the price. Great power handling for how small these speakers are, would definitely recommend!
